Students constantly ask me what my favorite books are or what am I currently reading. So, I created this page! I have included the basic summaries (from the back of the book or "Goodreads"), what I like about the books, the other books in the series (if they are any). I will add different books from time to time. Remember to make sure your parents approve of whatever you choose to read.
Carve the Mark by Veronica Roth (author of Divergent series)
In a galaxy powered by the current, everyone has a gift.
Summary: Cyra is the sister of the brutal tyrant who rules the Shotet people. Cyra’s currentgift gives her pain and power — something her brother exploits, using her to torture his enemies. But Cyra is much more than just a blade in her brother’s hand: she is resilient, quick on her feet, and smarter than he knows.
Akos is the son of a farmer and an oracle from the frozen nation-planet of Thuvhe. Protected by his unusual currentgift, Akos is generous in spirit, and his loyalty to his family is limitless. Once Akos and his brother are captured by enemy Shotet soldiers, Akos is desperate to get this brother out alive — no matter what the cost.
The Akos is thrust into Cyra's world, and the enmity between their countries and families seems insurmountable. Will they help each other to survive, or will they destroy one another?
Carve the Mark is Veronica Roth's stunning portrayal of the power of friendship — and love — in a galaxy filled with unexpected gifts (summary provided by Goodreads.com)
Shipes says: This book is a delightful blend of Star Wars type science fiction and Divergent inequality. Both characters are interesting and compelling. I really like the idea of the current gift. Each character is given a special ability from the force that controls the galaxy. I also love the strength of Cyra. I can't wait until the next book comes out.

The Lunar Chronicles
Summary: Once upon a time, in the future... The Lunar Chronicles are futuristic retellings of classic fairy tales. In CINDER, a teenage cyborg (half human, half machine) must deal with a wicked stepmother, start a rebellion against the evil Queen Levana, and decide how she feels about a handsome prince. As the series continues, Cinder forges alliances with Scarlet, a spaceship pilot who is determined to solve the mystery of a missing loved one — with the help of a magnetic street fighter named Wolf; Cress, a computer hacker who is imprisoned by Queen Levana; and Winter, a princess who's in love with a commoner, and who discovers that Cinder, Scarlet, and Cress may hold the key to saving her kingdom — and the world. (Summary from http://thelunarchronicles.com/books/. This website also provides more information about the books).
AR Levels:
Cinder - 5.8; Scarlet 5.8; Cress -6.0; Winter -5.9
Shipes Says: These books were a pleasant surprise. Though the main plot of the stories are based on traditional fairy tales, the details are not predictable. In other words, the author imagines Cinderella and the others in a different way. I absolutely love the science fiction elements. There are aliens, space crafts, robots, and interesting technology. I think readers will enjoy these books, because they are so different. I really like reading about the different relationships between all the characters. WARNING: There is violence and some graphic scenes of the disease.
Series: Book 1: Cinder, Book 2: Scarlet, Book 3: Cress, Prequel: Fairest, Book 4: Winter.

They are engaging, entertaining, and action packed.Kelsey is an incredible character; she is funny, sarcastic, and endearingly unsure of herself (though sometimes frustrating!) Splintered Series
Summary:
This stunning debut captures the grotesque madness of a mystical under-land, as well as a girl’s pangs of first love and independence.Alyssa Gardner hears the whispers of bugs and flowers—precisely the affliction that landed her mother in a mental hospital years before. This family curse stretches back to her ancestor Alice Liddell, the real-life inspiration for Lewis Carroll’s Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. Alyssa might be crazy, but she manages to keep it together. For now. When her mother’s mental health takes a turn for the worse, Alyssa learns that what she thought was fiction is based in terrifying reality. The real Wonderland is a place far darker and more twisted than Lewis Carroll ever let on. There, Alyssa must pass a series of tests, including draining an ocean of Alice’s tears, waking the slumbering tea party, and subduing a vicious bandersnatch, to fix Alice’s mistakes and save her family. She must also decide whom to trust: Jeb, her gorgeous best friend and secret crush, or the sexy but suspicious Morpheus, her guide through Wonderland, who may have dark motives of his own (From Goodreads).

Shipes says: These books are really different, even though they are based on Alice in Wonderland. They take a different turn. I liked them very much. Alyssa is a great character that many readers will like. The love triangle in this series is a little predictable, but still interesting, because it occurs in such an interesting and crazy world. Morpheus is compelling and a hard character not to like. WARNING: There is some violence and kissing scenes.

The Host by Stephanie Meyer:
Summary: Melanie Stryder refuses to fade away. The earth has been invaded by a species that take over the minds of human hosts while leaving their bodies intact. Wanderer, the invading "soul" who has been given Melanie's body, didn't expect to find its former tenant refusing to relinquish possession of her mind. As Melanie fills Wanderer's thoughts with visions of Jared, a human who still lives in hiding, Wanderer begins to yearn for a man she's never met. Reluctant allies, Wanderer and Melanie set off to search for the man they both love (from Goodreads).
AR READING Level: 4.5
Shipes Says: I really enjoyed the Twilight books. So, when I saw that she had another book, I decided to read it. Though this book has a love story, it not quite the same as the love triangle between Bella, Edward, and Jacob. Mel and Wanderer are both such great characters. I liked them both and wanted them both to win. The love story in this book is complicated and very interesting. I also really like the character of Mel's brother, Jamie and her Uncle Jeb. It did take me a few pages to get into to the story. But, once Mel and Wanderer get to the caves, the story picks up and is hard to put down.

Shipe's Says: These books offer a different perspective on werewolves, vampires, warlocks, and the supernatural. Cassandra Clare created a unique world within our own that is compelling and interesting. Clary is a very believable and brave hero. Her relationships with her mother, Simon, and Jace are fun to read about. (NOTE: there is some demon killing and slight language. These books may not be suitable for kids under 13).

The Infernal Devices (the second Shadow Hunter series - PREQUAL to The Mortal Instruments)
by Casandra Clare
Summary:
When 16-year-old Tessa Gray crosses the ocean to find her brother, her destination is England, the time is the reign of Queen Victoria, and something terrifying is waiting for her in London’s Downworld, where vampires, warlocks and other supernatural folk stalk the gaslit streets. Only the Shadowhunters, warriors dedicated to ridding the world of demons, keep order amidst the chaos. Kidnapped by the mysterious Dark Sisters, members of a secret organization called The Pandemonium Club, Tessa soon learns that she herself is a Downworlder with a rare ability: the power to transform, at will, into another person. What’s more, the Magister, the shadowy figure who runs the Club, will stop at nothing to claim Tessa’s power for his own. Friendless and hunted, Tessa takes refuge with the Shadowhunters of the London Institute, who swear to find her brother if she will use her power to help them. She soon finds herself fascinated by — and torn between — two best friends: James, whose fragile beauty hides a deadly secret, and blue-eyed Will, whose caustic wit and volatile moods keep everyone in his life at arm’s length . . . everyone, that is, but Tessa. As their search draws them deep into the heart of an arcane plot that threatens to destroy the Shadowhunters, Tessa realizes that she may need to choose between saving her brother and helping her new friends save the world… and that love may be the most dangerous magic of all.”
The Infernal Devices are often called a prequel series to the Mortal Instruments, but only because they take place in an earlier time period and contain some of the Mortal Instruments’ characters’ ancestors. You don’t have to read the Mortal Instruments before The Infernal Devices. Shipes Says: These books are about Shadowhunters like the Mortal Instruments. However, these books have a different style. Again, there is a love triangle, but it is different because the two male characters are opposites in many ways. I love Will's sarcasm and sense of humor. This trilogy is very emotional and captivating. The last book also plays a role in the last book in the Mortal Instruments. There are some crossover characters.
Series: Clockwork Angel(Book 1), Clockwork Prince(Book 2), and Clockwork Princess (Book 3).
The Legend Trilogy

Born into the slums, fifteen-year-old Day is the country's most wanted criminal. But his motives may not be as malicious as they seem.
From very different worlds, June and Day have no reason to cross paths—until the day June's brother, Metias, is murdered and Day becomes the prime suspect. Caught in the ultimate game of cat and mouse, Day is in a race for his family's survival, while June seeks to avenge Metias's death. But in a shocking turn of events, the two uncover the truth of what has really brought them together, and the sinister lengths their country will go to keep its secrets
Shipes Says: I have read several dystopian series, such as the Hunger Games and Divergent. But, these are my absolute favorite mix of science fiction and dystopia. The two main characters (June and Day) are very well written. I really like that the book is told from both of their perspectives. There is a lot of action and character development. I also like the different technology and interesting elements of the future.
Series:Book 1: Legend, Book 2: Prodigy, Book 3: Champion

The Reawakened Series (also by Colleen Houck)
Summary: When seventeen-year-old Lilliana Young enters the Metropolitan Museum of Art one morning during spring break, the last thing she expects to find is a live Egyptian prince with godlike powers, who has been reawakened after a thousand years of mummification. And she really can't imagine being chosen to aid him in an epic quest that will lead them across the globe to find his brothers and complete a grand ceremony that will save mankind. But fate has taken hold of Lily, and she, along with her sun prince, Amon, must travel to the Valley of the Kings, raise his brothers, and stop an evil, shape-shifting god named Seth from taking over the world.
Shipes says: Because I am such a HUGE fan of the Tiger's Curse books, I was immediately excited when Colleen Houck released the first book in her new series. I was not disappointed. Lily is a great character, and I really enjoyed going through her major character changes. Amon is another perfect "prince charming" type. The first book in the series is interesting and fun. I am curious to find out how Lily and Amon can bridge the gap between their worlds.

Hex Hall Books
Summary: Three years ago, Sophie Mercer discovered that she was a witch. It's gotten her into a few scrapes. Her non-gifted mother has been as supportive as possible, consulting Sophie's estranged father—an elusive European warlock—only when necessary. But when Sophie attracts too much human attention for a prom-night spell gone horribly wrong, it's her dad who decides her punishment: exile to Hex Hall, an isolated reform school for wayward Prodigium, a.k.a. witches, faeries, and shapeshifters.
By the end of her first day among fellow freak-teens, Sophie has quite a scorecard: three powerful enemies who look like supermodels, a futile crush on a gorgeous warlock, a creepy tag-along ghost, and a new roommate who happens to be the most hated person and only vampire student on campus. Worse, Sophie soon learns that a mysterious predator has been attacking students, and her only friend is the number-one suspect.
Shipes Says: Sophie is hilarious! She is perhaps one of my most favorite female characters. Rachel Hawkins takes the supernatural world to a different level. She adds something new to this genre. The plot twists were not completely predictable. Overall, I really like the whole series. I was not disappointed at all. (Note: There is some mild bad language and violence. Please make sure these books are okay with you and/or parents before you read them. These books may not be suitable for kids under 13).

Shipes says: This book is laugh out loud funny. It is similar to Diary of a Wimpy Kid (I have not read those); however, this book deals with serious and interesting topics. Rafe is endearing and extremely likable. There are pictures and doodles throughout the book. They add a comic book style to the novel and make it even better. I have read the first two books in this series. The first two were very easy to read and fun. He has published more; I plan to read the rest of them at some point.
